Spending in India

Payments in India

Use a physical Revolut or Wise card for everyday spending, carry a second bank card separately, and keep some Indian rupees as backup.

Our recommendation

A simple, reliable setup

This combination gives you excellent exchange rates, broad card acceptance and a practical backup when cash is needed.

01

Primary card

A physical Revolut or Wise Visa or Mastercard for everyday spending.

02

Backup card

A second physical card from another bank, kept separately.

03

Cash reserve

₹5,000–₹10,000 in practical ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500 notes.

Cards & currency

Pay in Indian rupees

Revolut and Wise normally offer excellent PLN/EUR-to-INR conversion rates—often much better than traditional European banks or airport exchange counters. Cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and larger shops.

INR

Always choose INR

There is no need to exchange money before travelling. Revolut and Wise can convert automatically when you pay. If a terminal or ATM offers PLN or EUR, decline it and choose Indian rupees to avoid a poor exchange rate.

Cash & preparation

Keep a practical reserve

Keep ₹5,000–₹10,000 for small shops, markets, tips, autorickshaws and situations where cards are not accepted. Smaller notes are the most useful.

Before departure

  • Enable international and ATM transactions
  • Check your card’s cash-withdrawal limits
  • Keep access to your banking app for security confirmations
